Why August is the Perfect Time to Wash, Repair and Waterproof Your Horse Blankets

Why August is the Perfect Time to Wash, Repair and Waterproof Your Horse Blankets

It is still incredibly hot outside, but cooler weather will be here before we know it! August is the perfect time to take inventory of your horse blankets and make sure they are clean, repaired, waterproofed and ready for fall.

Waiting until the first cold or rainy day can leave you scrambling to find a usable blanket. By taking care of them now, you can head into the next season knowing your horse’s blankets are fresh, functional and ready when needed.

Beat the Fall Rush

Once temperatures begin to drop, horse owners start pulling blankets out of storage—and that is often when they discover torn fabric, broken straps, missing hardware or lingering dirt from the previous season.

Having your blankets professionally serviced this time of year, allows plenty of time to address these problems before the demand increases. It also means you will not have to choose between using a damaged blanket and leaving your horse without the protection they need.

Remove Dirt, Sweat and Bacteria

Horse blankets collect more than visible dirt. Hair, sweat, oils, manure and other debris can become trapped in the fabric and lining. If a dirty blanket is placed in storage, stains and odors may become more difficult to remove, and the buildup can irritate your horse’s skin the next time the blanket is worn.

Professional blanket washing provides the deep cleaning that bulky horse blankets require. Large commercial equipment can clean them thoroughly without overcrowding a household washing machine or putting unnecessary stress on the blanket’s fabric and hardware.

A clean blanket is also much easier to inspect for hidden damage.

Repair Small Problems Before They Become Bigger

A small tear or loose strap may not seem urgent now, but minor damage can quickly compromise the appearance and functionality of your horse’s blanket.

August is an excellent time to inspect each blanket for:

  • Rips, holes or worn areas in the fabric
  • Loose or damaged stitching
  • Torn leg and tail straps
  • Missing or bent hardware
  • Torn lining
  • Worn binding around the edges

Regularly inspecting the lining, straps, hardware and stitching ensures you catch any potential issues early on, preventing more involved and costly repairs.

Restore Weather Protection

Over time, the waterproofing coating on your horse blankets will start to break down. Other factors such as incorrect cleaning methods, using harsh detergents or rips and tears can further compromise the integrity of the waterproofing coating.

Waterproofing ensures your horse doesn't get caught unprotected on those cold, rainy days to come. If you notice the water not beading and running off your horse's blanket, it is time to re-waterproof the blanket.

Protect Your Investment

Quality horse blankets are an investment. Proper washing, timely repairs and routine waterproofing can help extend their usable life and keep them looking and performing their best for your horse.

Trying to wash a heavy blanket in a standard household machine can overload the machine and may not clean the blanket thoroughly. The fabric, straps and hardware can also be damaged if the wrong products or cleaning methods are used.

Professional blanket care gives each item the attention it needs while saving you the time and mess of doing it yourself.

Get Ready Now Before the Cooler Weather Arrives!

August may seem too early to think about blankets, but it is one of the best times to prepare. Since your blankets are not yet in daily use, this is the time to complete necessary repairs, and you can avoid the last-minute fall rush.

Wilsun Custom Products offers professional horse blanket washing, repair and waterproofing services to help you prepare for the season ahead.

Don’t wait for the first cold or rainy day to discover that your horse’s blanket needs attention. As the oldest and largest horse laundry business in the state, you can trust that your horse blankets are in good hands when you choose Wilsun Wash.
