Staying Cool in the Saddle: Tips for Riders During the Summer Heat

Staying Cool in the Saddle: Tips for Riders During the Summer Heat

While we spend a lot of time making sure our horses stay comfortable in the heat, riders need to take care of themselves too. Long days in the sun, high temperatures, and busy schedules can quickly lead to fatigue and dehydration.

Here are some simple ways to stay cool, comfortable, and focused during summer rides and horse shows.

Start Hydrating Before You Ride

One of the biggest mistakes riders make is waiting until they're thirsty to drink water.

To stay ahead of the heat:

  • Drink water throughout the day.
  • Increase hydration the night before.
  • Bring a refillable water bottle wherever you go.
  • Consider electrolyte drinks during particularly hot or humid days.

Proper hydration helps maintain energy, focus, and stamina in the saddle.

Dress for the Weather

Modern riding apparel is designed to help riders stay cooler during summer months.

Look for:

  • Moisture-wicking shirts
  • Ventilated riding helmets
  • Lightweight show coats when permitted
  • Technical riding socks
  • Breathable gloves

Choosing the right clothing can make a noticeable difference during long days at the barn.

Find Shade Whenever Possible

Between classes or lessons, take advantage of shaded areas.

Good options include:

  • Barn aisles
  • Tents
  • Trees
  • Covered arenas

Even short breaks out of direct sunlight can help reduce heat buildup and prevent exhaustion.

Pack a Summer Survival Kit

A few essentials can make a hot show day much more comfortable:

  • Water bottle
  • Electrolyte packets
  • Cooling towel
  • Sunscreen  *MUST for long days out in the sun. Be sure to reapply at least every 80 minutes.*
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Portable fan
  • Extra shirt for after riding

Having these items on hand can help you stay refreshed throughout the day.

Fuel Your Body

Long days often mean grabbing whatever food is convenient, but proper nutrition matters.

Choose snacks that provide lasting energy:

  • Fresh fruit
  • Trail mix
  • Protein bars
  • Yogurt
  • Sandwiches or wraps

Heavy, greasy foods can leave you feeling sluggish in the heat.

Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion **Very Important**

Riders can be affected by heat just as easily as horses.

Watch for:

  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Excessive sweating
  • Nausea
  • Muscle cramps
  • Fatigue

If you begin experiencing symptoms, stop what you're doing and move to a cooler area, and hydrate. Be mindful of these signs and let someone know immediately. Don't hesitate to take breaks when needed.

Enjoy the Summer Riding Safely

The summer months can create some of the best memories of the year. By using these tips, you can enjoy every ride while staying safe in the heat as well as your horse.
