There’s nothing quite like baby season at the barn. The excitement, the anticipation, and those first wobbly steps from a newborn foal—it’s a reminder of why we love this life so much! Whether you’re welcoming your first foal or you’re a seasoned breeder, here are some fun and fascinating facts about pregnant mares and foals! 🌸🐣

• The pregnant mares carry about 11 months. The average gestation period for a mare is around 340 days—but it can vary by a few weeks. That means patience is key during baby season!
• Mares are naturally designed to foal in the spring when weather is milder and grass is plentiful—giving foals the best possible start. As well as, preferring to give birth late at night or early morning, this allows the foal to have a chance to get its legs under it while predators are less active. 
  
• Lightning Fast Delivery!! Active labor is incredibly quick compared to human births. Once the mare's "water breaks," the foal is typically delivered in just under 30 minutes! 

• Once the foal is born, most are up and standing within an hour after birth—and nursing in 2 hours. Unlike human babies, foals are born with their eyes fully developed.
