Keeping Your Horse Cool During the Summer Months 🐴☀️

June 05, 2026

Keeping Your Horse Cool During the Summer Months 🐴☀️

As temperatures rise, keeping your horse comfortable and healthy becomes a top priority. Whether you're spending long days at the barn, heading to weekend horse shows, or enjoying trail rides, summer heat can take a toll on your horse if proper precautions aren't taken.

Here are some simple ways to help your horse stay cool, hydrated, and happy all summer long.

Prioritize Hydration

Water is the most important tool for preventing heat-related issues. Horses can lose several gallons of water through sweat during hot weather, especially when working or traveling.

Tips for keeping your horse hydrated:

  • Ensure clean, fresh water is available at all times.
  • Check water buckets and troughs frequently.
  • Bring familiar water from home when traveling if your horse is picky about drinking.
  • Consider adding electrolytes when recommended by your veterinarian, especially during periods of heavy sweating. Also, be sure to have a second, plain water option just in case your horse dislikes the salty taste.

A well-hydrated horse is better equipped to regulate body temperature and recover after exercise.

Ride During Cooler Hours

Try scheduling rides and workouts during the cooler parts of the day:

  • Early morning
  • Late evening

Avoid strenuous exercise during peak afternoon heat whenever possible. If you must ride during warmer hours, shorten sessions and allow for frequent breaks.

Make Shade a Priority

Whether your horse lives in a pasture or spends time outside between classes or show, access to shade is essential.

Look for:

  • Run-in sheds
  • Trees with adequate coverage
  • Portable shade structures at horse shows

Shade can significantly reduce heat stress and provide relief from direct sunlight.

Help Your Horse Cool Down After Work

After riding or competing, cooling your horse properly is crucial.

Effective cooling methods include:

  • Hosing with cool water
  • Scraping excess water away and reapplying
  • Walking until breathing returns to normal
  • Offering water during the cooling process

Watch for Signs of Heat Stress

Knowing the warning signs can help prevent a serious situation.

Signs may include:

  • Excessive sweating or lack of sweating
  • Rapid breathing
  • Elevated heart rate
  • Lethargy
  • Muscle weakness
  • Poor recovery after exercise

You can check your horse for heat stress by placing your hand directly on the chest, neck, or shoulders to feel for excessive, trapped heat and to check how much they are sweating. If you suspect heat stress, move your horse to a shaded area, begin cooling measures, and contact your veterinarian if symptoms persist.

Use Fly Protection

Summer heat often brings flies, gnats, and other insects that can make horses uncomfortable.

Consider:

  • Fly masks
  • Fly sheets
  • Fly sprays
  • Proper manure management around the barn

Reducing insect irritation helps horses remain calmer and more comfortable during hot weather.

Keep Show Horses Comfortable on the Road

Traveling to summer horse shows adds another layer of heat exposure.

Before loading up:

  • Check trailer ventilation.
  • Offer water frequently during stops.
  • Avoid parking in direct sunlight for extended periods.
  • Allow horses time to cool and settle after arriving.

A little preparation can make a big difference in your horse's comfort and performance throughout the show weekend.

Summer Comfort Starts with Good Preparation

Summer is one of the best times of year to enjoy your horse, but it also requires extra attention to their health and comfort. By focusing on hydration, proper cooling, shade, and thoughtful management, you can help your horse perform at their best even during the hottest months.

At Wilsun, we know summer means long days at the barn and busy weekends at horse shows. From custom embroidered saddle pads and barn accessories, to our horse blanket washing and repair services, we're proud to help equestrians stay organized and prepared for every season.
