Horses can be susceptible to all kinds of skin issues, ranging from girth galls to rain rot. While there are countless products used to prevent and treat these kinds of skin conditions, one of the most important contributing factors that often gets overlooked is how clean you keep your tack and gear.
Your horse's skin is their first line of defense, so what you put directly on it makes a difference in their overall health and protection. Fly sheets and show scrim sheets are commonly used throughout the summer to protect horses, but they can get dirty and sweaty over time.
Wet, dirty tack and gear can be a breeding ground for bacteria, contributing to skin conditions like rain rot. Built up dirt, hair and sweat on saddle pads and girths can also create friction when it starts rubbing against your horse, especially in sensitive areas like the girth and withers, causing skin irritation, rubs and sores. This can be uncomfortable for your horse and even potentially lead to more serious conditions later on.
Every day, especially in the summer, make sure to give your tack a quick wipe down to remove dirt and sweat. Depending on the season and how frequently you use your tack, it’s best to do a more thorough clean every week or month to help remove all of the built up grime.
Tack like saddle pads will absorb sweat, which is good when you are riding, but that also means all of the dried sweat and grime will stay embedded in the pad until you wash it. Similarly, any sheets you use throughout the summer will need frequent washing to make sure it doesn’t lead to skin irritation and issues. Dirty girths can start to create friction when it rubs against your horse, putting them at risk for chafing and girth galls.
Whether you use some soap and water on your girth or have your saddle pads laundered, make sure everything is completely dry before you put it away to prevent mold and mildew growth.
